Strengthening the Family Planning Program (SFPP): A Community of Practice for NYS Program Directors and Managers Cohort 2
Following the success of the pilot cohort and in direct response to your requests for networking, peer learning, and mentorship, NYSFPTC is excited to launch the second cohort of Strengthening the Family Planning Program (SFPP)! SFPP is an 8-month community of practice where FP program directors and managers can strengthen their knowledge, confidence, strategies, and support networks for effectively implementing NYS FP programs. This program is tailored for FPP-funded agency staff who provide administrative oversight and thought leadership on the implementation and management of their FP programs, either for their entire agency or at specific sites, and have 7 years or less of experience in FP program management.
Program goals:
- Increase newer FPP program leaders’ confidence in their ability to manage and implement FPP programs
- Increase knowledge of core FPP guidelines and best practices for meeting those guidelines among participants
- Create greater opportunities for relationship building among program leaders across levels of experience
- Facilitate sharing of promising practices for implementation and management of FPP programs
- Create opportunities for participants to collectively strategize on resolving challenges faced as newer FPP program leaders
- Increase familiarity of resources available to support program implementation and improvement through the NYSFPTC and RHNTC
Benefits of the program:
- 7 virtual (Zoom-based) group sessions of 90 minutes, with schedule based on participants’ preference/availability
- Up to 2 fully funded 1.5-day in-person convenings (travel expenses reimbursed)
- Co-designed educational content with topics informed by participant needs, with a focus on core FPP guidelines and topics such as employee retention and engagement; financial management; staff training; community education, participation and engagement (CEPE, formerly CPEP); equity-aligned decision-making; and other issues that keep program leaders up at night
- Dedicated time to identify and work toward goals for personal leadership development and FP program improvement
- Opportunity for 1:1 coaching sessions with NYSFPTC team
- Peer consultation to problem solve particular challenges at your agency
- Facilitation and support from experienced leaders and subject matter experts with knowledge of and experience with the FPP
Notable outcomes from SFPP Cohort 1:
- 100% of Cohort 1 closing survey respondents agreed or strongly agreed that they would recommend SFPP to a colleague
- 100% of Cohort 1 closing survey respondents agreed or strongly agreed that participation in SFPP was an effective use of their time
- 94% of closing survey respondents reported moderately or greatly increased confidence in their program director or manager role
- Some notable accomplishments among the pilot cohort included efforts to support employee engagement and retention (e.g., standardizing staff check-ins, more collaborative decision-making), improved delegation, enhanced training curricula, more streamlined communication across sites, and systems improvements for managing contraceptive supply
